THE LIGHT HOUSE

This old firewood light house shows, through an exhibition it contains, which were, not long ago, our ways of life and customs. Resides, from its embattled terrace, you can see a spectacular landscape: from Matxitxako Cape to The French Landes.

The story of The Light House starts in the middle of the XVIII th Century, although the existence of a luminous signal, destinated to prevent the shipwrecks at the dangerous entrance to the harbour, was already known in the XVI th Century.

The Light House, also known as “La Farola”, was built by the San Sebastian Consulate at 180 metres above the sea level and had a fixed light that was switched on from 14th September to 3th May.

Although it was one of the best lighthouses at that time, it was finally abandoned owing to the Carlist War breakages and the fogs which frequently blinded it.

When in 1854, a new lighthouse was built, situated on one side of the mount at 130 metres above the sea level, the old one was eventually abandoned.

From 1912, The Mount Igueldo Society decided to regain the splendour of the old lighthouse, and rebuilt it, with the project of the architect Mr. Luis Elizalde. A new floor with wide windows was added, and above this, a fabulous panoramic terrace.

From the terrace, the visitor can enjoy one of the prettiest and impressive views of the town of San Sebastian, and its surroundings.
