Picturesque, charming are some of the qualifiers received by The Funicular Railway every day, and it is the best way to access to Mount Igueldo and the same time you can see how San Sebastian lies at your feet.
On the 25th August 1912, The Funicular Railway was inaugurated, the oldest in The Basque Country and the third in the State.
It was the need of providing a quick access to The Funfair what led its founders to choose this way of transport, which in only 200 seconds and in a straight line allowed to ascend to over 160 metres above the sea.
The Funicular Railway was projected by the engineer Mr Emilio Huici in collaboration with The Suisse House Von Roll. It has only a line except in its central zone, where a system of double line allows the cross of the ascending and descending carriages.
This charming Funicular Railway keeps on working daily with the same equipments and carriages of its inauguration. The carriages maintain, with some changes, the original wooden body-work, and it is The Funicular Railway that has best preserved its original state, and therefore it is an attraction added for which it was first conceived as an essential complement of The Mount Igueldo Funfair.
